Great news!
I’m so happy to report that over the past few days I’ve been going through a whole bunch of new footage for one of the stories in the film and have made some great progress incorporating it into the overall structure.
For the first time in a while I’m feeling really good about where this is all going and a fairly complete vision of the film is finally coming into focus for me. So much so, that over the next two weeks my plan is to have a first rough cut of the whole film in place. Which basically means I have a beginning, middle and an end…it actually feels like a movie finally instead of lots of random, half constructed bits and pieces in search of direction.
This is a big accomplishment!
There are sections of the film that hang together really well and others that still need a lot of work, but the main structure is clear which is huge and makes moving forward that much easier.
Editing a film is a bit like driving through an incredibly long dark tunnel with lots of exits on either side. You keep taking the exits thinking they will lead you to where you need to go, but most of the exits are either dead ends or take you into areas you don’t want to be (especially in the dark) so you turn around and keep traveling through the tunnel, holding onto the idea that somehow you’ll find a way out and emerge into the light at some point.
So, despite the workload ahead, I’m thrilled to say…I have emerged!
